The Jao Tsung I Academy in the São Lázaro district of Macau is a cultural institution dedicated to the life and achievements of the renowned Chinese scholar Jao Tsung I.
Jao Tsung I
Jao Tsung I was a renowned Chinese scholar, painter, and calligrapher widely regarded as one of the greatest contemporary masters of Sinology.
Born in Chaozhou, he became famous for his vast scholarship covering fields such as Chinese history, literature, archaeology, linguistics, and art. Over a career spanning more than seven decades, Jao held academic positions at institutions including The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and several international universities.
In addition to publishing hundreds of academic works, he was also celebrated for his traditional Chinese paintings and calligraphy, which were exhibited worldwide. His profound contributions to Chinese culture earned him numerous international honors and made him one of the most influential scholars of modern Chinese studies.
History
Established by the Macau SAR Government and opened to the public on 11 August 2015, the academy was created to introduce visitors to Professor Jao's academic and artistic accomplishments while promoting traditional Chinese culture and scholarship.
Jao, though largely based in Hong Kong, had a close connection with Macau and supported its cultural development, donating paintings and calligraphic works to local institutions. The academy continues this legacy by serving as a venue for exhibitions, lectures, and cultural activities related to Chinese literature, history, and art.
Architecture and Design
The academy occupies a historic residence built in 1921, located near Tap Seac Square. The building was officially listed as a protected heritage structure in 1984.
Architecturally, it reflects the European-influenced residential style that was popular among Macau's wealthy families in the early twentieth century.
The building features a neo-classical façade, decorative columns and arches, and an elegant arcade on the southeast side. Ornamental details such as keystones, columns, railings, and plaster decorations contribute to its refined appearance.
Although the interior has been adapted for cultural use, the exterior has largely been preserved, illustrating Macau's architectural blend of Chinese and European influences. Today the building includes exhibition rooms, a library, lecture spaces, and landscaped front and rear courtyards.
Exhibits and Cultural Activities
The academy's exhibitions primarily focus on the scholarship and artistic work of Professor Jao Tsung-I. Permanent displays present his paintings and calligraphy, highlighting the diverse subjects and techniques he mastered, including landscapes, flowers, bamboo, and historical scripts.
Many works demonstrate his expertise in traditional Chinese calligraphy, including the four classical script styles as well as ancient scripts such as oracle-bone writing. In addition to the permanent displays, the academy regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and seminars devoted to Chinese culture, literature, and art. These events help transform the historic building into an active centre for cultural exchange and academic discussion.

The Jao Tsung-I Academy is open between 10 am and 6 pm. (closed Monday). Admission is free.
The following buses 2, 2A, 4, 9, 9A, 12, 18, 18A, 19, 22, 25 and 25B also all stop close to the gallery at Jardim Da Vitória.
From Senado Square and the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Macau the Tap Seac is about 20 minutes on foot. Other attractions in the area include Guia Fortress and Lighthouse, the
