Beijing Aman
Price per night: RMB 3700 - 4400
One of the most luxurious resort chains in Asia, Aman arrived in Beijing in 2008. Located on a premium site next to the Summer Palace, this resort is perfect for relaxing and exploring the numerous nearby historical sites. Traditional courtyard structures which once housed the imperial kitchen of the Summer Palace have been converted into gorgeous, spacious rooms with wood floors, three-story-high ceilings, and classic Ming-style furniture. There's also a great spa, movie theater and three high-end restaurants.
Westin Beijing Chaoyang
Price per night: RMB 3500 - 4800
Nearest metro: Liangmaqiao
Book the Westin Beijing Chaoyang
One of Beijing's newest five-star hotels, the capital's second Westin offers stylish, modern rooms in a central location with quick airport access. Public spaces feel corporate but rooms have a nice homey touch with white orchids, Chinese artwork, and furniture accents, while bathrooms are spacious with separate tubs and showers. Some rooms have terrific views of downtown Beijing. A luxurious spa, along with a well-equipped gym and large swimming pool, make for standout amenities. Check out the steakhouse.
Grand Hyatt Beijing
Price per night: RMB 3800
Nearest metro: Wangfujing
Great location above Oriental Plaza Mall and a stone's throw from Wangfujing and Tiananmen Square / Forbidden City. Standard rooms are spacious and well-equipped, service second to none. The palatial lobby is a popular meeting place, with live music in the evenings. Some of Beijing's best restaurants - including Noble Court and Made in China - can be found here.

Ritz Carlton, Financial Street
Price per night: RMB 4500 - 8000
Nearest metro: Fuxingmen
Book the Ritz Carlton Financial Street
Caters to a corporate clientele but retains a homey feel - best beds in town. Spacious marble bathrooms come with his-and-her sinks and televisions anchored in front of the bathtub. The basement health club and spa are top-notch. Upgrading to an executive room gives you access to a 24-hour club lounge, plus free WiFi. In-house restaurant Cepe serves the city's best upscale Italian fare. About 20 minutes to Tiananmen Square by metro.

Shangri-La Beijing
Price per night: RMB 1000 - 1800
Slight inconvenient location and drab exterior more than made up for by luxurious rooms, sumptuous spa and easy access to Summer Palace and Western Hills. Three great in-house restaurants, plus beautiful hotel garden with al fresco bar.

The Opposite House
Price per night: doubles start at RMB 5000 - 6500
Book The Opposite House Beijing
Nearest metro: Tuanjiehu
Designed by famous Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and opened in 2008, this funky boutique hotel's 99 contemporary guest rooms are among the largest in Beijing. Rooms are strikingly simple with natural wooden floors and subtle touches of Chinese dor, lending each one a sense of place. Great location in the vibrant heart of the Sanlitun embassy district.
Park Hyatt
Price per night: RMB 2000 - 2500
Nearest metro: Guomao
Towering over Beijing's Central Business District, this gargantuan new 66-story hotel boasts expansive views over downtown Beijing. The Park Hyatt has a top-notch gym and spa, as well as plenty of in-room amenities, such as Japanese toilets with bidets and automatic-opening lids, fragrant soaps, and a beautiful collection of complimentary teas. The 66th-floor China Grill offers delicious, if pricey, steaks and raw seafood, while the 6th floor Xiu offers reasonably-priced cocktails and live entertainment.

Kerry Centre Hotel
Price per night: RMB 1300 - 1450
Nearest metro: Guomao
Now showing a few signs of age, the Kerry Centre is still well-regarded for its service and remains a popular choice for business travelers. Executive floors have far roomier bathrooms and added luxuries like free Internet, Bose CD players, huge plasma TVs and DVD players. The hotel also boasts a great health club. Check out in-house restaurant Horizon for its scrumptious dim sum lunch buffet and the bar Centro for fantastic (if pricey) cocktails.
Hotel Cote Cour SL
Price per night: deluxe suite RMB 2668
Nearest metro: Dongsi
This 14-room boutique gem set around a 500-year-old courtyard mixes traditional Chinese charm and contemporary chic. Expect flat screen TVs, free WiFi and a swanky lounge where the chef cooks up whatever is fresh from the market that day. Though not as spacious as the suites, the Deluxe Superior (number 203) is the room to book, with higher ceilings and bustling street views. A second launch hotel by the same folks is in the 798 Art District.
Hotel Kapok
Price per night: RMB 500+
Nearest metro: Wangfujing
Conveniently located in a quiet neighbourhood close to Wangfujing and the Forbidden City, this Chinese take on funky boutique wraps its distinctive milky-green latticed frame around a five-storey former government building. Designed by influential local architect Zhu Pei, the 89-room hotel flips the traditional hutong concept on its ear - re-working the system of courtyards and public spaces in the vertical for the modern-day traveller. Glass corridors wrap around a central courtyard leading to the 27 suites and 62 standard rooms, some with private pebble courtyards. Service can be sketchy, but great value considering the location.
