Sham Shui Po 深水埗區
Sham Shui Po is a vibrant and bustling district located in Kowloon. A mostly blue collar and far-from-affluent area of Hong Kong it is best known for its lively and colorful street markets.
Sham Shui Po is situated in the northwestern part of the Kowloon Peninsula. It borders the districts of Cheung Sha Wan to the north west, Tai Kok Tsui to the south east and Mong Kok to the south.
Street Markets
A highlight of Sham Shui Po is a visit to one of its many busy street markets. Apliu Street Market is known for its electronics and second-hand goods, while Golden Computer Arcade is a haven for computer and video game enthusiasts.
Pei Ho Street is a popular wet market selling a variety of foodstuffs including fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and meat products. It is also a good place to eat at one of its many food stalls.
Toy Street specializes in toys and school supplies. It is located on both Fuk Wa Street and Kweilin Street.
Sham Shui Po is also well-known as a center for fabric and craft supplies. Various stores and markets in the area offer a wide range of textiles, beads, buttons, and other materials for sewing, tailoring, and jewelry projects. Fashion designers, students, and craft enthusiasts are frequent visitors.
Ex-Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir
The Ex-Sham Shui Po Service Reservoir (Ex-SSPSR) is a former reservoir on Mission Hill in Sham Shui Po. It was built in the early 20th century to supply water to the Kowloon area including Kowloon Tong, Sham Shui Po and Tai Hang Tung. The reservoir was large for its time and had a storage capacity of around 9,900 cubic meters. It was rediscovered in 2020 after it was decommissioned in 1970. Nowadays, it is possible to visit the underground reservoir and marvel at its Roman-style red brick arches, vast concrete ceiling and 108 granite piers.
Sham Shui Po Park
Nearby Sham Shui Po Park is a popular spot for picnics, jogging, and other outdoor activities. It was built on reclaimed land where the Sham Shui Po Barracks once stood. The park has a children's playground, a fitness corner, and a basketball court.
Access - Getting There
Sham Shui Po Station is on the Tsuen Wan Line of the MTR. The preceding station towards Central is Prince Edward and the following station towards Tsuen Wan is Cheung Sha Wan. The station opened in 1982 and its color is dark green. There are several street markets near the station including Sham Shui Po Toy Street and Apliu Street Market.
Various Hong Kong buses and Public Light Buses run to or through the area.
These include buses 2F, 30A, 33A, 35A, 37, 42A, 58X, 59X, 60X, 66X, 67X, 68X, 69X and 86C.
Accommodation
Not well-served for accommodation, it is better to stay in nearby Mong Kok. Mong Kok has several recommended hotels, a number in the top-end category.
Cordis offers international class facilities including a spa, an outdoor heated pool and two fitness studios. The hotel has direct access to Mongkok MTR Station.
The Dorsett Mongkok, a short walk from Olympic MTR Station, has a restaurant and good facilities at a reasonable rate.
Stay in style at iclub Mong Kok Hotel or the excellent Stanford Hotel on Soy Street near the Ladies Market.
