The creator of the Shanghai Expo mascot Wu Yong Jian, designed Haibao to embody the Chinese character "人" (person), symbolizing the central role of people at the expo. The blue color symbolizes hospitality, imagination, the sea, and future technology. Haibao literally translates to "treasure of the sea," with "Hai" (海) representing Shanghai and "Bao" (宝) meaning treasure.
