Tam Kung Temple is an historic temple in the picturesque village of Coloane south of Taipa in Macau. Tam Kung aka Tam Tai Sin is a Taoist sea god worshipped in both Hong Kong and Macau.

History

The temple dates from 1862 and the Portuguese period in Macau. Coloane was a former island, separated from Taipa, until land reclamation began in the 1990s. It had a reputation as a haven for not just fisher folk but also pirates.

Coloane is the quietest and most rural part of Macau, known for its village atmosphere, green hills, and coastal scenery. Coloane still retains a slower pace of life, with pastel-coloured buildings, several small temples, and traditional eateries in Coloane Village. Visitors often come for hiking trails, beaches such as Hac Sá, and landmarks like the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier, making it a peaceful contrast to Macau's busy casino districts.

The rather dark interior typical of Chinese temples is noted for a whale bone that has been carved into the shape of a racing dragon boat and painted in vivid red.

The temple is located on Estrada da Aldeia at the southern end of Coloane Village. Other places of interest nearby include several other temples (Tin Hau, Kun Iam, Sam Seng) and the beautiful Chapel of St. Francis Xavier.
