The Hong Kong Science Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui is a short walk east from Nathan Road and adjacent to the Hong Kong Museum of History.
Established in 1990, the museum is a fun day out for knowledge-hungry children and their parents with over 500 exhibits, 70% of which are hands-on and interactive.
Exhibits
The four-storey building has 16 separate gallery spaces introducing science and technology themes such as electricity, energy, computers, communication, food, light, magnetism, mathematics, motion, sound and transportation.
The ground floor exhibition gallery has exhibits on Biodiversity, Environmental Conservation, Life Sciences, Light, Mathematics, Motion and World of Mirrors.
The first floor exhibition gallery has exhibits on Electricity and Magnetism, Safety and Sound.
The second floor exhibition gallery has exhibits on Food Science, Home Technology, Telecommunications, Transportation and Prototypes.
The third floor is specifically dedicated to young children with exhibits designed by Universcience - Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie in France which encourage kids to work together to complete various science related tasks.
The highlight of a visit to the Science Museum is the 22 meter-high Energy Machine, which rises through the four storeys of the museum and is the largest of its kind in the world. The machine demonstrates various types of energy conversion through the movement of balls, with accompanying sounds and light shows.
The Science Museum offers a number of educational programs such as guided visits for school groups throughout the year (Tel: 2732 3220) and daily science demonstrations on such themes as: Liquid Nitrogen, Transportation, Molecular Gastronomy and Artificial Clouds.
The museum also hosts periodic special exhibitions, lectures and presentations. Recent previous special exhibitions have included "Miffy and the Ocean," "The Hong Kong Jockey Club Series: Eternal Life - Exploring Ancient Egypt Exhibition" and "T-Rex Revealed - The Augmented + Virtual Reality Experience."
