Hong Kong Zoo and Botanical Garden. — Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens

The Hong Kong Zoological & Botanical Gardens (HKZBG) are an oasis of peace and greenery on Victoria Peak, not far from the Peak Tram terminal.

The historic zoo and botanical gardens date from the mid 19th century and admission is free.

There are a number of mammals, reptiles and birds at the zoo. The mammals include Orangutan, tamarin, gibbon, deer, the popular meerkats and sloth.

The zoo's aviary has over 600 birds with flamingo, duck, goose and crane. Other birds include geese, hornbills, ibis, parrots and plovers.

Among the reptiles are alligators, tortoises, turtles and snakes.

Hong Kong Botanical Gardens

The botanical gardens in Hong Kong display mainly tropical and sub-tropical plants with over 1,000 species in all: camellias, magnolias, bamboo, bauhinia, palms and azaleas are abundant and collected in their own separate garden spaces.

There is a herb garden and shrub collection near the Fountain Garden as well as a Camellia Garden, Magnolia Garden, Palm Garden, Azalea Garden and Pollinator's Garden. The greenhouse contains a variety of orchids, ferns, vines and bromeliads.

The HKZBG offers a number of educational programs such as guided visits for school pupils throughout the year (Tel: 2723 6047/ 2723 6080).

Chinese War Memorial

The Chinese War Memorial is dedicated to all Chinese who fought and died in World War I and World War II. It was first erected in 1928 as a tribute to those who fell in WW I. It was officially opened by Governor Cecil Clementi on 6 May 1928. This long-standing monument was originally called The Hong Kong Memorial and commissioned by the Imperial War Graves Commission (IWGC). It was originally built to commemorate the over 900 Chinese who had lost their lives at sea with the British Merchant Navy and auxiliary formations during World War I. The memorial was extended further to also take into account the high number of casualties sustained by the Chinese Labour Corps who served in Europe during World War I. After incurring damage during World War II, it was repaired once the war ended and was rededicated to all Chinese who had lost their lives in Hong Kong during the Pacific War. The gate is guarded by stone lions both in the front and in the back of the gate.
