Ornamental Boat At The Summer Palace, Beijing, China
Read a guide to Beijing's Summer Palace built in 1750 by Emperor Qianlong for his mother.
Emperor Qianlong (1711-1799) was the sixth emperor of the Qing dynasty and one of China’s longest-reigning rulers, serving from 1735 to 1796 before abdicating in favor of his son while retaining significant influence. His reign is known for territorial expansion, cultural flourishing, and consolidation of imperial power, including the promotion of arts, literature, and architecture. Qianlong also commissioned major projects, such as the Siku Quanshu, the largest collection of Chinese literature in history. However, his later years saw increased corruption and financial strain, which contributed to challenges for the Qing dynasty after his death.
