Located just off Kowloon West Station is the relatively recent Xiqu Centre which is the Hong Kong's new home for traditional Chinese Opera.

The building's design was inspired by traditional Chinese lanterns and the exterior of the building reflects this.

Inside, there are two main theatres, classrooms and lecture halls. The building is to be used to help preserve the art of Xiqu which is Chinese opera and through the year, there are many exhibitions and shows.

The Xiqu Centre serves as a platform for the preservation, development, and promotion of the rich cultural heritage of Chinese opera. It aims to engage both local and international audiences in the appreciation and understanding of this traditional art form.

Architecture

Designed by renowned architect Bing Thom and opened in 2019, the Xiqu Centre's architecture is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Chinese architectural elements. The building features a striking façade adorned with wooden fins that resemble bamboo scaffolding, symbolizing the blend of tradition and modernity.

The Xiqu Centre hosts a diverse range of performances, including Cantonese opera, Sichuan opera, Peking opera, and other regional styles of Chinese opera. In addition to stage productions, it also offers educational programs, workshops, and outreach initiatives to nurture talent and promote audience appreciation of xiqu.

Facilities

The Centre houses state-of-the-art facilities, including a Grand Theatre with approximately 1,100 seats and a Tea House Theatre with around 200 seats. These venues are equipped with advanced audiovisual technology to ensure an immersive and high-quality theatrical experience.
