Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Sha Tin (香港文化博物館)
The Hong Kong Heritage Museum in Sha Tin, close to the Che Kung Temple, is housed in a modern reconstruction of a traditional ancestral hall.
The spacious, three story building holds temporary exhibitions from museums around the world as well as its own impressive, permanent collection.
It is the largest museum by area in Hong Kong with space for up to 6,000 visitors.
Layout
The ground floor has the museum gift shop, cafe and seminar room along with the Children's Discovery Gallery and Jin Yong Gallery.
The first floor includes the Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall, a theatre, Thematic Galleries 1 to 5, and the Chao Shao-an Gallery of the artist's paintings and calligraphy.
The second floor holds the T.T.Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art and Thematic Gallery 6.
Exhibits
The museum displays exhibits on local history, performing art, folk art, popular culture, design (including book, graphic and fashion design produced in Hong Kong), contemporary art (photography, ceramics and print), Chinese antiquities, painting and calligraphy.
There are also lots of fun, interactive, hands-on displays for kids in the Children's Discovery Gallery.
The T.T. Tsui Gallery of Chinese Art displays exhibits from the now closed Tsui Museum of Art. These include antique Tang and Ming dynasty Chinese ceramics, bronzes, furniture, jadeware, lacquerware, pottery sculptures, stone carvings, as well as Tibetan pieces.
The Cantonese Opera Heritage Hall displays costumes, documents and other artefacts from Cantonese Opera.
There is also a 350-seat theatre on site.

The museum is a 5 minute walk from Che Kung Temple MTR station (Exit A). Alternatively, the museum is a 15-minute walk from Sha Tin Station (Exit A) or Tai Wai Station (Exit A).
The Hong Kong Railway Museum, Sam Tung Uk Museum and Sheung Yiu Folk Museum are all branch museums of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum.
Nearby
A visit to the museum can be combined with seeing the Temple of Ten Thousand Buddhas and the Taoist Sha Tin Che Kung Temple just across the river.
Close to the Temple of Ten Thousand Buddhas is the Po Fook Hill Cemetery.
