Hong Hong International Airport opened in 1998 and was designed by Sir Norman Foster, who was also responsible for the new Terminal 3 at Beijing International Airport.
Hong Hong International Airport (HKG) replaced the old Kai Tak Airport in Kowloon and was built on reclaimed land on the small islands of Chek Lap Kok and Lam Chau, which were leveled and are now attached to the larger island of Lantau.
Hong Kong International Airport serves over 60 airlines and is a major Asian hub with flights to major destinations around the world and to mainland China.
Terminal 2 (T2), which opened in 2007, is linked to Hong Kong and Kowloon by the MTR Airport Express Line and various bus services. There are numerous buses to other cities in the Pearl River Delta including Shenzhen (1 hour), Guangzhou (3 hours, 30 mins), Nanning (5 hours) and many other destinations in China.
Ferries from the airport's SkyPier sail to six ports in the Pearl River Delta, including Macau (50 mins), Shenzhen Shekou (30-40 mins), Shenzhen Fuyong (45 mins), Dongguan Humen (70-90 mins), Zhongshan (70 mins), and Zhuhai Jiuzhou (50 mins).
The Terminal 2 building contains the SkyPlaza shopping and entertainment mall. T2 is check-in only.
Cathay Pacific, the flagship carrier of Hong Kong is based at the airport, along with Dragon Air, Hong Kong Express, and Hong Kong Airlines.
The Hong Kong International Airport Automated People Mover, a driverless train, moves people seamlessly around the well-sign posted airport to and from the gates.
HKIA has flights to over 140 destinations worldwide and to many other Chinese cities including Beijing, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Harbin, Hohhot, Lijiang, Nanning, Shanghai, Wuhan, Qingdao, Urumqi and Xian. Check elong.com for cheap flights.
Among the many destinations in Asia and the Middle East with flight connections to HKIA are Tokyo, Seoul, Manila, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, Taipei, Singapore, Doha, Mumbai, Osaka, Sapporo, Koh Samui, Cebu, Chennai, Jeddah and Fukuoka.
47.8 million passengers used HKIA in 2007 and there are plans to build a third runway for this already 24-hour airport.
