Shanghai taxis are plentiful, metered and fairly cheap.
Taxis in Shanghai can be hailed on the street or congregate at stations and hotels. You can also call for a taxi to come and pick you up at your hotel.
Flagfall is slightly more expensive at night from 11 pm to 5 am. There is a standard charge for the first 3 kilometers and a further charge for each kilometer thereafter.
Most Shanghai taxi drivers do not speak English so having your hotel card with the hotel name written in Chinese or your destination printed in Chinese characters is the way to go.
Taxi cabs have a distinctive sign on the roof which is illuminated when for hire at night.
The number of taxis in Shanghai is around 50,000 and increasing. Cars are often Volkswagen Santanas.
Around 150 licensed taxis companies operate in the city. Some of the larger companies include Bashi, Haibo, Jinjiang, Qiangsheng and Dazhong.
Shanghai taxis accept both payment in cash and the Shanghai Public Transportation Card (SPTC). Tipping is not expected, though, of course, not refused.
