Shanghai has a comprehensive system of predominately modern air-conditioned buses that cover most parts of the city.

There are over a 2000 bus routes in Shanghai (including city center, trolleybuses and suburban lines) with some of the main intersections at Shanghai Railway Station and People's Square in the downtown area. Over 10 companies operate the city's buses.

Shanghai bus fares are cheap but the buses are often very crowded, especially at rush hour and English is at a minimum or non-existent at bus stops and on announcements in the buses.

A Shanghai Public Transportation Card can be used on the majority of Shanghai's bus routes, otherwise pay the conductor or place your fare in the slot at the entrance.

Shanghai buses run from around 4 am to 10.30 pm and many lines connect with Shanghai's metro system.

Shanghai bus stops are clearly marked and are mostly covered from the elements.

Some buses in Shanghai have WiFi and the city is planning to introduce new green buses that will run on recycled cooking oil.
