The Lu Xun Memorial Hall is located to your right as you enter the main entrance of Lu Xun Park, directly behind Hongkou Stadium.

This fascinating museum is dedicated to the life and works of Lu Xun (1881-1936), a writer, translator and essayist considered the founder of modern Chinese literature.

History

Often writing in the vernacular, simplified Chinese of the common man of his day, Lu Xun became the recognized leader of the Chinese League of Left-Wing Writers in Shanghai in the tumultuous pre-war period of the 1920's and 1930's. Lu Xun's masterpiece is The True Story of Ah Q.

Lu Xun also spent time in Japan as a student and was then present in China during the convulsive pre-war period of his country's history, thus affording him a comprehensive perspective on the travails China was to experience in his lifetime.

Though never a formal member of the Chinese Communist Party, Lu Xun supported the struggle of the proletariat to throw off the yoke of both the Kuomintang and the invading forces of the Japanese army.

In 1956 the writer Lu Xun's Mausoleum and Museum were built in the park to mark the 20th anniversary of the great novelist's death. The park was officially renamed Luxun Park in 1988. The writer's former residence is just south of the park on Shanyin Lu (Lane 132, House #9).
