There are designated cycle paths at the side of most roads in Beijing but care needs to be taken with the city's maniac drivers.

Bicycles are a great means of transport for getting around old Beijing especially on a clear day.

An old favourite among the locals and some foreigners is the 'Flying Pigeon' bicycle. Be sure to carry a good lock as theft is a common problem with bicycles. Chinese style double ring bells are a good souvenir but tend to rust quickly.

There are numerous roadside bicycle repair shops scattered throughout the city.

The usual advice for cyclists apply in Beijing as well as other large cities - ride defensively, wear a helmet and use a light at night!
