The Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen) in Beijing is the monumental, historic entrance to the Forbidden City and the symbolic heart of modern China. Built in 1420, it is famous for being the site where Mao Zedong proclaimed the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 and for its iconic Mao portrait.
