Beijing's Best Bites: Hatsune
Daniel Allen
A perennial favorite with Beijing expats and all lovers of uncooked fish, Hatsune justifiably wins awards every year for the capital's top sushi joint.
Owned by a Chinese-American, the extensive California-meets-Japan menu is complemented perfectly by the stylish, minimalist decor, charming waiting staff, and a hip yet relaxed atmosphere. Crowded every night of the week, reservations are a must.
Menu
Hatsune's menu includes many variations of Japanese classics, and is renowned for its numerous creative sushi rolls - popular orders include the "119" Roll made with tuna and spicy sauce, and the stuffed crab with avocado roll.
The steak teppanyaki, grilled cod and fresh sashimi are also well worth sampling, washed down with some excellent warm sake. In addition to the evening a la carte menu there is also a set lunch special for RMB 65 (USD 9) on weekdays with a wide selection of dishes.

A sister restaurant to Hatsune, called Haiku, recently opened in the Block 8 complex at Chaoyang Park West Gate, and has also received rave reviews.
