Songbirds are still kept as pets in Beijing, and the tradition of "walking" caged birds in public parks continues to be practiced, largely by the older generation. While it is less common among younger, faster-paced urbanites, this cultural hobby remains a notable part of life in the city's traditional residential areas, known as hutongs.
