Tiananmen Gate (the Gate of Heavenly Peace) in Beijing is the monumental, highly symbolic entrance to the ancient Imperial City and the Forbidden City. It is famous as the political heart of modern China, renowned for its classic Ming Dynasty architecture and its role as the backdrop for Mao Zedong’s 1949 founding of the PRC.
