National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) 中国美术馆
The National Art Museum of China (previously China Art Gallery) focuses on collecting, studying and displaying modern and contemporary works of fine art from all over China.
The National Art Museum of China was opened to the public in 1963 with its title-board inscribed by Mao. The building is one of the "Ten Great Constructions" completed for the 10th anniversary of the foundation of the People's Republic in 1949 along with The Great Hall of the People, Beijing Railway Station and the Workers' Stadium.
The main building of the museum follows the architectural style of a traditional Chinese tower roofed with yellow glazed tiles and surrounded by corridors and pavilions.
Exhibits
The Museum now holds about 100,000 pieces of art work in its vast and varied collection. Modern and contemporary works make up the majority of the exhibits including masterpieces by renowned Chinese painters; award-winning works from China's major art competitions, and a great variety of Chinese folk art.
The collections are divided into ten categories, displayed in 17 galleries over five floors, some of which include painting, sculpture, ceramics, paper cuts and shadow puppets.
There are 117 pieces of European and American art including four works of Pablo Picasso donated by the German collectors Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ludwig. These works were China's first big acquisition of Western art. Now there are frequent exhibitions of foreign art and previous shows have included works by Marc Chagall, Joan Miro and Salvador Dali. The Museum also collects some pieces of African wood sculpture and other foreign art works.
