Bell Tower 西安钟楼

  • Situated at the heart of the old city
  • First dates from 1384 in the early Ming Dynasty
  • Now houses a collection of bells
  • Good views from the 3rd floor balcony
  • Original bronze bell was rung at dawn

Xian's Bell Tower is the city's most recognizable building. Situated at the crossroads of the old town's four main roads - Xi Dajie (West Main Street), Dong Dajie (East Main Street), Bei Dajie (North Main Street) and Nan Dajie (South Main Street) - the Bell Tower is the very heart of Xian's ancient city.

The wooden Bell Tower dates from 1384 and was moved to its present location from two blocks west in 1582. Restored in 1739, the structure now sits on a brick base at the center of a traffic circle and is reached by underground passage.

The Bell Tower now holds a collection of Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) bells, chimes and other musical instruments.

Musical performances are held throughout the day and the balcony affords great views of the city on a clear day.

The Bell Tower, along with the Drum Tower, has become the symbol of Xian and is illuminated at night.

Access

Enter through the underground passageway and buy a combined ticket for the Bell and Drum towers together.
