Shanghai Buses

Shanghai has a comprehensive system of predominately modern air-conditioned buses that cover most parts of the city. There are over a 1000 bus routes in Shanghai with some of the main intersections at Shanghai Railway Station and People's Square in the downtown area.

Fares are cheap but the buses are often very crowded, especially at rush hour and English is at a minimum or non-existent at bus stops and on announcements in the buses.

A Shanghai Public Transportation Card can be used on the majority of Shanghai's bus routes, otherwise pay the conductor or place your fare in the slot at the entrance.

Buses run from around 4am to 10.30pm and many lines connect with Shanghai's metro system.

Bus stops are clearly marked and are mostly covered from the elements.

Shanghai also has a number of tourist line buses which cover the main sights and start from Shanghai Stadium.

In addition there are several sightseeing buses, including double decker buses. Visitors can purchase a one-day ticket and get on and off the special buses.

A bus service also connects Pudong International Airport with Hongqiao International Airport. There are buses from Pudong to Hongkou Stadium, Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai South Railway Station, Zhongshan Park and other destinations.
