Designed as the world's largest building (at 460-meters, with 94 floors) when work began in 1997, the Shanghai World Financial Center in Pudong becomes the world's second largest building when it opens in August 2008. The initial size was increased to 492 meters with 101 floors during construction.

The Burj Dubai became the world's tallest building when it opened in 2009 followed by Taipei 101 in Taiwan. The tower's observation deck is located on the 97th-100th floors and is the highest in the world at 474 meters, with majestic views over Shanghai.

The Shanghai World Financial Center was designed by New York-based, US architects Kohn Pedersen Fox working with local partners, East China Architecture and Design Institute.

The multi-use building is occupied by offices, shopping malls, restaurants, a media center, a conference hall and the luxury Park Hyatt Shanghai Hotel.
