The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food
by Fortune 8 Lee
Rightly deserving of all the hype, New York Times journalist Fortune 8 Lee's The Fortune Cookie Chronicles: Adventures in the World of Chinese Food is a hugely enjoyable journey through the social history of Chinese food, the huge Chinese restaurant industry in America and immigrant Chinese cultural identity in general.
This lovingly researched and amusing book traces the background to such supposedly "Chinese" favorites as the fortune cookie, chop suey and General Tso's chicken and leads the Chinese American author on a search that takes in not only the States, but China, Japan and other places in the Chinese diaspora.
The idea for the book came from the mass pay outs on the U.S. Powerball lottery in 2005, when the winners, drawn from across America, entered a set of the numbers found in fortune cookies, this spurred the writer to research the influence of Chinese food in America and the corresponding effect of America on its Chinese immigrants and their cuisine. Recommended.
